Beneficiaries post with gifts

Aristophanes once said, hunger knows no friend but its feeder. Saturday July 25, 2020 will forever remain inscribed in the heart of the elderly persons living in the Ntakekah neighborhood in Nkwen, Bamenda III Sub-division as the Non-Governmental Organization Refugee Welfare Association Cameroon, REWAC came to their aid providing foodstuffs and cooking equipment.

As changing times in the midst of the crisis  the North West and South West  Regions persists, REWAC as part of its missions to alleviate poverty and ensure food security to vulnerable migrants in the communities within a two months period spanning from July to August 2020 decided to encompass elderly persons who are most vulnerable to be affected by the Coronavirus. Although all age groups are at risk of contracting Covid-19, elderly people face significant risk of developing severe illnesses if they contract the disease due to physiological changes that come with ageing and potential underlying health conditions.

The Refugee Welfare Association converging on the premises of Presbyterian Church Ntakekah, Nkwen, for the donation exercise, schooled the elderly persons on Covid-19 and Gender Based Violence and how those who face such can get help through REWAC. Providing the elderly persons with such knowledge, REWAC Gender Base Violence GBV specialist Akumbom Bernadette Voche, explained in details how they can successfully live with their children at home, the do’s and don’ts of training and bringing up their children back at home and as well, made them to understand more on GBV which as a result of the crisis period in the region, there has been an increase in GBV cases. Bernadette Voche used the opportunity to advise them on some of their worries and told them to go to the Social Affairs delegation for proper treatment of their cases as REWAC also serves as a referral pathway.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Project Coordinator at REWAC Jingkoh Laura, exhorted them to take the gifts with love and use it for good purposes. She also explained to them that the essence of their outing is to support them during this Covid-19 period “REWAC has come out today to support you all by giving foodstuffs, savon and other things. It is a way with the help of our partners to support vulnerable persons during this challenging health menace.” Jingkoh Laura said.

While thanking the donors of the gifts, the beneficiaries expressed their thanks to the Almighty for blessing REWAC through them “We feel fine after receiving these as it will sustain us for some time. We faced difficulties to buy foodstuffs, savon and all the like and so with these things we will manage it well to feed ourselves and our families.”

The items distributed by REWAC comprised of 5kg of rice, 1liter red oil, cubes of savon, 1 kettle, 1 packet of Maggi, salt, 1 bucket, 1 cooking pot and 1 packet of sanitary pad.
It is thanks to the partnership with the AVAAZ Funded Project in collaboration with the Refugee Welfare Association Cameroon that some elderly persons, widows and family heads are benefiting these relief materials.
