NORTH WEST CUSTOMS SECTOR CELEBRATE WORLD CUSTOMS DAY IN BAMENDA

The customs family of the Northwest Region has joined the rest world to celebrate world customs day in Bamenda.

The celebration marking this year's edition of the world customs day took place at the custom's office at upstation Bamenda on friday January 24,2020 in the presence of some top officials of the North west region headed by the Secretary General at the North west Governor's office Mr Viang Mekala.

The Chief of the North West Customs sector, Commandant ACHA Kennedy NGU in his address, sited the origin of the world customs day which is celebrated on the January 26 each year by all customs administration in the 150 countries that make the world customs organization with head quarters in Brussels, Belgium.

According Commandant ACHA, the day brings to light the efforts of the men and women who work in customs administrations across the globe ad they contribute to raise revenue, carry out surveillance of the national customs territory, protect domestic industries and national economic environment against dumping and smuggling, ensure security, contribute in the fight against drug trafficking, cross border crimes and assist other government agencies. The head of customs for the Northwest Region gave a presentation of the North west custom service which is manned by about 150 well trained boys and gilrs, distributed in the various customs houses and Offices in Essimbi, Abunshie, Sabongari, Nkambe, Esu, Luss and Bamenda.

He added that the prevailing socio political crisis in the North west and South west Regions has had a toll on the activities of the customs sector but nevertheless he and the team are forging ahead to attain the goal sets by the hierarchy.

Inline with this year's theme of world Customs day which is "Customs: fostering sustainability for people, prosperity and the planet" Dedicated to the contribution of customs towards a sustainable future where economic, health and environmental needs are at the heart of the customs service.

Commandant ACHA Kennedy said that by virtue of the fact that they are present at the borders, they are able to fight cross border and international criminality, human and drug trafficking and money laundering, fight against the entry of toxic products, wastes and non-biodegradable plastics into the country.
He equally made mentioned of the recent seizure of about 200kg of pangolin scales in Bamenda, pangolin is an endangered and protected animal species. And in the health front, the custom sector assist the competent authorities in the fight against illicit drugs and pharmaceutical products which are dangerous to the health of the population.

Commandant ACHA Kennedy used the occasion to hand over some rel materials to five internally displaced families, to him the custom family can not be indifferent with the suffering families due to the present socio political crisis in the Region.

Mr Tanni Joseph was recognized for his contribution to revenue realization and respect of ethics withing the North west customs sector.

The following customs officers; Longla Mbabap Gilbert, Ndzouli Ariane, and Inassou were all recognized for their professionalism, steadfastness and devotion to their respective post of duties.
