BeLA EMPOWERS MEDIA PRACTITIONERS ON MAINSTREAMING GENDER IN COVID-19 REPORTING

Close 30 Journalists alongside local language broadcasters in the North Weat Region have been trained by Beacon of Light Association  (BeLA) incolaboration with the Delegation of Women's empowerment and the Family and the Delegation of Public Health in mainstreaming gender in their reporting of covid-19, giving special focus on the needs of Women and Girls. The training took place on Wednesday May 13, 2020 at Mondial hotel Bamenda.

While addressing the media practitioners in her Opening address, the Founder and CEO of BeLA, Mrs Wango Eleen, outlined the Mision and objectives of the Association, she equally reasons why Journalists should mainstream gender in their covid-19 reporting.
"Women are mostly care givers and with the advent of covid-19, the Load of the Woman have increase, we discover that most petit traders and buyam Salam are women and with the outbreak of covid-19 their economic power has drop because they need to protect themselves by staying at home and respecting  other guidelines put in place by the Government. Gender Base Violence has equally increase during this period, some men due to the drop in their income are transferring their aggression on women while in confinement. The media is consider as the mouth piece of the society, so at the level of BeLA we thought that the media can easily reach out to the community"  said the CEO

The Regional Delegate for Women's empowerment and the family Mr Wirba Kassan while opening the training workshop, appreciated BeLA for such an initiative to trained media practitioners in mainstreaming gender in their reporting. The Delegate called on the Journalists to always put on their "Gender lenses" while reporting given that they remain the eyes and mouth of the Community.

Mr Teteh Kingsley Coordinator of the Covid-19 center at the Bamenda Regional hospital, gave an inside on "Understanding Covid-19 and the response to the health crisis."  The health expert demystified some of the myths related to Covid-19. In response to his presentation,  alot of worries came up from the Journalists, who were clarified but cautioned that some issues in the medical field can't be brought up for public consumption.
Obah Rosaline 
The main focus of the workshop was mainstreaming gender in covid-19 reporting, handled by Mrs Obah Rosaline an expert in gender communication. She encouraged the media practitioners to always project the Women in their covid-19 report who make up a greater percentage of the vulnerable population. She added this should  begin in their various newsrooms.
Group work
To crown the workshop, the participants listen to a report on covid-19, which highlighted that most patients no longer go to the hospital including pregnant women who stay away from anti-natal visites for fear of being contaminated with Covid-19. The participants were divided into four groups to access the report and propose different angels that journalists can focus their report on.

Certificates of participation and a USB Flash each containing the various presentations were handed over to all to the participants who are expected to join a 30 days online and offline Campaign with Beacon of Light Association. The association also promise  prizes for the best report on the activities of the Association and reports related to Covid-19 that will highlight the plight of Women and Girls.
