A view of the meeting
At these turbulent times affecting the population characterized by poverty and diseases, the council’s chief Shepard announced the reduction of rents of the council market stores in order for their occupants to enjoy the largess of the council authorities.
The fight against coronavirus has thus stepped up in Bamenda chief town of the Northwest region and the Bamenda II municipality is not different. Bringing together quarter heads that makes up the municipality, they all received tap-buckets, cubes of soap, cartons of face masks, packets of toilet rolls and disinfectants for the use in the battle against covid-19.

Gladdened by the kits received, some of the quarter heads promised to transmit the message to those in their quarters “when we know that there is someone infected by coronavirus, we have to call 1510. I am taking home to my community the various preventive measures I have learned today and also to educate my quarter people on the development plans of the mayor” Anguh George Che said.

With the hope of involving all the quarter heads to be development partners of the council, they will benefit financial advantages from the council in order to motivate and empower them as one of the drives to alleviate poverty among the community and the benefit from a capacity building workshop that will school the quarter heads on how to go about land, law and security issues in their respective quarters. Summing up all the challenges faced by the quarter heads, Mayor Chenwi Peter explained in details the decentralization text which gives quarter heads the status of supervisory authorities of projects in their respective quarters.

The Mayor outlined that the exchange with the quarter heads, was a move towards preventing covid-19 “we had to coordinate all the quarter heads from Mankon, Chomba, Nsongwa and Mbatu to come here so that we give them training and they are going back to extend the messages they have acquired to the rest of the people in their communities. However, the mayor announced that the quarter heads will help in the spheres of revenue collection while the council will also utilize them in the business of contracts in the municipality “in the council’s intension to help our brainwashed brothers drop their arms and leave the bushes, a council fund is now operational at the council to give them some financial assistance and job opportunities to help re-integrate them back to our community”. The mayor added.

The Divisional Officer for Bamenda II Tanyi Akwo Roquecegnol emphasized that drinking spots, bars and restaurants are so far not respecting government’s rules on preventing covid-19 “we used this opportunity to convene the various quarter heads of the sub-division to help us to go back within the community and lay emphasis on the sensitization while informing the population that repressive measures will henceforth be meted on defaulters".
